Biographie

Qiu Zhijie est né en 1969 à Zhangzhou, dans la province chinoise de Fujian. Il obtient en 1992 son diplôme de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts du Zhejiang, à Hangzhou. Il vit actuellement à Pékin, où il exerce son travail d'artiste, de critique d'art, de commissaire d'expositions et d'enseignant. Qiu Zhijie est connu pour son utilisation de nombreux mediums artistiques (calligraphies, photographies, vidéos, installations...), mais aussi pour sa contribution importante au renouvellement de la réflexion artistique, par toute une série d'expérimentations décisives, notamment autour du corps et des sciences, des rapports entre individu et société, et du rôle de l'art lui-même.

Au milieu des années 1990, Qiu a rédigé d'importants travaux critiques sur la conception de l’art chinois et la performance artistique, qui ont conduit à la plus importante controverse dans la théorie de l'art et le monde de l'art chinois. Considéré comme un des leaders les plus éminents des artistes de la jeune génération, Qiu demeure très sollicité par le monde culturel pour ses importantes contributions esthétiques et intellectuelles. Il serait difficile de les citer toutes. En 1996, Qiu Zhijie a co-organisé la première exposition d'art vidéo Phenomena & Image à l'Académie des Beaux-Arts de Hangzhou. Il a également édité deux livres présentant la quasi totalité des documents de l'histoire de l'art vidéo à travers le monde. Il a joué un rôle important en Chine dans le recours artistique aux technologies offertes par les nouveaux médias. En 1999, Qiu organise une exposition Post-sens Sensibility - Alien Bodies & Delusion dans un immeuble de Pékin. Cette exposition, montrant les travaux expérimentaux des artistes de la jeune génération utilisant la chair humaine comme matériel artistique, a suscité d'importants débats sur le renouvellement du champ de la recherche artistique. En 2001, Qiu co-dirige une importante revue artistique, Nextwave, et devient co-commissaire du projet l'année suivante. Plus récemment, il a repris et développé le concept d'art total.


COMMENTAIRE 

Artiste très créatif qui s'exprime dans plusieurs médias, Qiu Zhijie est sollicité sur la scène artistique internationale. Poète essayiste à l'âge de la réalité virtuelle, Qiu Zhijie s'exprime notamment par la photographie mettant en scène son propre corps. Ici couvert de rivets métalliques, là inoculé sur le bras ou dans la paupière par des seringues multicolores.

Dans la photographie "Tatoo II", le caractère rouge tatoué qui sépare sa poitrine et vient couvrir sa bouche se lit "non tu ne dois pas". Réalisée non par une superposition de plans, mais par de la peinture rouge répandue sur son torse et sur le mur, cette image constitue une icone extrêmement forte, maintes fois reproduite, symbole de cette génération d'artistes qui, en Chine, tentent d'exister.
