Biographie
Zhao Gang est né en 1961 à Pékin. Adolescent, il intègre le groupe dit « des étoiles », le premier mouvement artistique d’avant-garde à revendiquer la liberté artistique en Chine. En 1983, Zhao Gang part étudier à la State Academy of Fine Arts de Maastricht en Hollande, puis au Vassar College de New York, où il devient citoyen américain. Le choc de sa découverte de la culture occidentale est marqué par une désillusion profonde. Il commence dès lors à appliquer des méthodes de déconstruction, portant aussi bien sur les matériaux et le matériel utilisés que sur les techniques, les courants et les idées artistiques. Ses œuvres picturales, aux sujets et aux thèmes riches et divers, expriment les contradictions ressenties par l’artiste entre ses espoirs de jeunesse et sa vie d’adulte, entre le rêve et la réalité. Porteuses d’une ironie mordante et exutoire, elles traduisent souvent un profond sentiment de solitude. Il vit et travaille actuellement à New York.
