CHINESE LANDSCAPE

In the series “Chinese Landscape” (Zhuozheng Gardens) the artist now takes up compositions of famous traditional Chinese works of art that he reproduces by charging them with a more disturbing and murky atmosphere, reinforced by the use of color. omnipresent red. The paradoxically poetic anguish that seems to emerge from these works is thus for the artist a means of expressing the conflict that exists between reality, fiction and tradition.

THE ARTIST

Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1960 and graduated from Nanjing University of the Arts in 1987, HONG LEI entered Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1992 to continue his studies in printmaking. Inspired by his first apprenticeships in traditional Chinese painting at Yuan Ming Yuan, he then returned to Changzhou where he began to work on photography from an artistic perspective. During the 1990s, he thus became one of the leading artists of the “New Chinese Photography” movement.
