Zeng Fanzhi est connu pour ses personnages avec puissants regards soulevés, sur les mains et les visages stéréotypés; il simule une certaine fatigue avec la société contemporaine dans laquelle la consommation atteint son apogée et conduit à la solitude et l’aliénation totale de la société et de soi-même. Ses peintures sont si riches en expression que nous rappelle l’art pouvoir explicatif peut atteindre.
COMMENTAIRE
Artiste marqué par l’expressionnisme, ZENG Fanzhi a tout d’abord fait figurer, dans ses premières peintures, des personnages écorchés. De 1994 à 2001, il a travaillé sur sa célèbre série Mask. Chaque personnage de cette série porte un masque blanc moulant parfaitement son visage. Ses personnages se protègent sur le visage, mais également en revêtant des vêtements dénotant un statut social confortable.
Si l’un considère l’œuvre en développement de Zeng Fanzhi comme le reflet d’un voyage psychologique, on est en droit de se demander où mène ce voyage. Il y a quinze ans, les protagonistes de ses peintures étaient des victimes sans défense habitant un monde illogique. Ensuite ils ont porté des masques pour entrer dans un royaume de flâneurs urbains partageant des relations superficielles. À présent, les masques sont tombés et les protagonistes sont totalement seuls, dépouillés et sans substance. Ils ont abandonné toute affectation. Peuvent-ils à présent se reconstruire ? Nous attendons la suite de ce voyage avec impatience.
