It was probably love for the artists rather than reason that prompted Jean-François ROUDILLION to undertake the creation of the Catalogue Raisonné of sculptor Philippe HIQUILY in 2006. Its publication six years later, however, proved the value of such an undertaking. To do justice to the scope and diversity of an artist who was still little known to the general public a few years ago, there could be no shortcuts.
Armed with this experience, the conclusion was simple: why not continue this crazy venture to reveal another artist of this generation, Francesco MARINO DI TEANA.
Today, that has been accomplished. Twelve years of research, inventory, and photography. Twelve years of hard work and rigor. That was what it took for these two men he loved so much. Sculptors with different temperaments and unique works, but united by the same passion for working with metal. The hand as a tool for shaping. Hammering, welding, sanding, and patinating. Relentlessly. Without faltering. with strength, humor, and precision.
Beyond even reason.
Their works, presented side by side, reveal their character and personality as much as they reflect an era: that of Gonzalez’s heirs, lovers of iron and steel. Artists who worked with metal, freed from rigid notions of sculpture, free…and unreasonable.
