Genius artists with creations that are moving or provocative, such as Liu Wei, Qiu Zhije, Zhang Huan, or Yan Peiming, as well as highly publicized "stars" like Zhang Xiogang, Wang Guangyi, Zheng Fanzhu, all share an insatiable need to communicate through images what cannot yet be spoken or what has long been silenced. Without their presence in the contemporary art landscape, we would not be able to trace so clearly the transformations that have affected the art world over the past fifteen years. By attempting to break taboos, lift censorship, and adapt to a society that has rapidly shifted from identity repression to the frenzy of capitalism, they have given rise to powerful modern "icons".
