Née en 1961 dans la province du Shaanxi, Lin Tianmiao est l’une des artistes d’installation les plus connues en Chine. Elle n'a reçu qu'une formation de design avant de partir à New-York où elle a vécu six ans, et où elle a commencé sa carrière d’artiste.

Biographie

L’ensemble du travail de Lin prend appui sur un questionnement permanent du lien entre identité et contexte social, sur le rôle social de chacun et de la mère en particulier, la sienne lui ayant enseigné très tôt l’art de travailler le coton. Elle n’a reçu qu’une formation de design avant de partir à New-York où elle a vécu six ans, et où elle a commencé sa carrière d’artiste.

La quasi-absence de formation académique dans la peinture à l’huile ou autres formes d’art classique est loin d’être un handicap pour elle ; bien au contraire, son art est entièrement dépourvu de la rigidité dogmatique. Ayant reçu l’influence des femmes artistes telles qu’Ann Hamilton, Barbara Kruger ou Kiki Smith, elle prend directement des objets dans la vie quotidienne, notamment les ficelles qui deviendront caractéristiques de son langage. Ficelles qui encerclent et entravent, mais qui assurent les liens aussi.

Dans la fameuse série d’installation-photographie « Here or There (Ici ou là) » qu’elle a réalisée avec son mari Wang Gongxin (artiste lui aussi), on voit différents paysages constitués d’éléments typiquement chinois comme les jardins, les champs, les arbres de prunus, mais toujours désolés, mornes, sans vie, et les constructions en ruine. Dans cette atmosphère oppressante, errent des personnages fantasmagoriques, toujours bandés par du tissu blanc. L’image d’un monde sans repère géographique ni temporel, dans lequel les hommes amorphes se perdent dans une étrangeté générale.
