Biographie

Né en 1963 à Harbin, Zhang Dali, également connu sous les pseudonymes de 18k et AK-47, il est un artiste chinois qui aime expérimenter les techniques et les médiums les plus divers, passant du graffiti à la photographie, de la sculpture à la peinture. Son art met en évidence les changements sociaux rapides qui ont déferlé sur la Chine ces vingt dernières années.

Après avoir étudié la reliure traditionnelle chinoise à l’Académie Centrale d’Art et de Design de Pékin, Zhang Dali se rend en Italie où il découvre l’art du graffiti. Il se met alors à peindre sur les murs en démolition de Pékin au début des années 1990. Entre 1995 et 1998, il peint son profil sur près de deux milles immeubles de la ville, à proximité du caractère chinois « chai » apposé par l’administration de la ville sur les bâtiments promis à une démolition rapide.

Début 2000, il aborde une série de portraits de travailleurs migrants. En produisant cette importante série de peintures portant l’inscription « AK-47 » (en référence à la célèbre Kalachnikov russe) il veut rendre hommage aux millions de personnes venues des quatre coins du pays pour reconstruire les grandes métropoles chinoises. Ces travailleurs migrants, qu’on appelle « Mingong », constituent un groupe spécial qui fut crée pendant l’ère de post-reforme de la Chine. Par le biais de cette série Zhang Dali évoque plusieurs thèmes liés à la situation actuelle de la Chine. Le premier thème qu’il aborde est celui de la violence, physique mais aussi morale, subie par les travailleurs chinois: « En Chine, la violence existe quelque part entre l’habitude et l’indifférence. Les travailleurs migrants vivent dans des conditions extrêmes et beaucoup sont victimes de la croissance accélérée de l’économie du pays. Bien qu’ils contribuent de manière significative à cette économie, ils en sont aussi les victimes car ils ne possèdent aucun droits ni protection dans le cadre de leur emploi. Mais ils sont aussi eux mêmes source de cette violence, une fois qu’ils obtiennent une meilleur position, en perpétuant le cercle vicieux qui consiste a soumettre les plus faibles. En ce sens, les bourreaux et les victimes ne font qu’un dans un monde où la moralité et l’équilibre sont absents. »

La référence au AK-47, une des armes les plus puissantes et les plus meurtrières de ce monde, symbolise également cette violence en évoquant la brutalité de la société. Elle permet à Zhang Dali de refléter dans ses travaux reflètent ses opinions sur le traitement inégal des citoyens chinois et de soulever la question de la possible réintégration de ces membres de la société dans une économie qui les place en retrait.

Zhang Dali aborde aussi au travers de ces portraits le thème de la pauvreté, en référence à ses propres expériences de vie (il a lui même vécu la pauvreté d’un artiste sans ressources), mais dans une double perspective. Il considère en effet que ces expériences ont aussi un aspect positif car elles nous amènent à repenser la situation de ces travailleurs en termes d’estime de soi et d’autonomie.
