Biographie

Né à Qingdao, dans la province de Shandong en 1956, Sui Jianguo a étudié la sculpture, à la Shandong Academy of Fine Arts, puis à la Central Academy of Fine Arts à Pékin, où il officie à présent en temps que professeur et directeur du département «Sculpture». Mondialement connu pour ses dinosaures et ses vestes Mao, Sui Jianguo a exposé partout dans le monde et ses œuvres sont présentes dans beaucoup de collections publiques.

La sculpture de Sui Jianguo représente l’introspection dans le processus artistique dans la Chine moderne : que ce soit le réalisme dans ses premières œuvres ou les formes classiques, dans sa suite les « vestes » Mao et les « dinosaures », dont il est question ici; ses sculptures traduisent essentiellement ce que représente les « idoles » du passé, ce qu’elles sont réellement dans l’inconscient du peuple chinois contemporain.

Sui Jianguo a participé à de nombreuses expositions internationales, tant d’un point de vue individuel que collectif, par exemple au Musée Beeldenaan Zee à La Haye, Pays-Bas, Today’s Art Museum à Pékin, Chine, le Musée d’Art Contemporain, Taipei, Taiwan, le Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Manille, Philippines ainsi qu’à l’Exposition Universelle de 2010 à Shanghai, Chine.

Commentaire

Directeur du département sculpture de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts, c’est grâce à lui que la sculpture abstraite et conceptuelle a été acceptée par les autorités chinoises. Dépassant les frontières de la Chine, il est probablement l’un des sculpteurs les plus prometteurs du XXIème siècle. En sculptant sa veste bombée à l’image de Mao Zedong, il veut associer chaque compatriote dans sa démarche d’introspection.
Cette veste voulue par Sun Yatsen en 1911 et portée par des millions d’individus en Chine symbolise la paternité d’une période qui a marqué toute une génération, symbole culturel extraordinairement puissant.
Plus récemment, son dinosaure rouge (symbole de la Chine impériale comme de la Chine communiste) porte gravée sur la poitrine la mention « Made in China », clin d’œil aux jouets en plastique du début de l’envolée économique chinoise, symbole cette fois d’une Chine millénaire qui s’éveille à la contemporanéité.
