Guo Wei

Guo Wei

Born in 1960, Guo Wei graduated in woodcut program at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1989, and currently lives and works in Sichuan Province, China. He is a pioneer of early group oil painting exhibitions at mainland institutions in the 90’s. Guo Wei consistently insists on the individual figure, and many of his subjects are Young girls that surround him, often his own daughter. Although trained in woodcut, he has mastered oil painting, playing with the sculptural qualities of the material ; for instance, in the exhibition, “Fabrication” showing works in which the artist makes cut-outs from acrylic canvases. Guo Wei’s bold use of colour reflects the vitality of his subjects, and spray-paint effects add an urban touch to his paintings. We could sum up his production in a renewed reflection on individualism, strikingly rising after the deep changes in Chinese society over the past few years. Guo Wei has had several gallery and institutional exhibitions, including Centre Pompidou and Hakgojae Gallery, Seoul.
