The core of his work is the tension between reality and illusion, in an hyperrealistic manner consisting of portrayals seen through wet glass. He believes that it is because of consumerism that people put “value” on all sorts of things, on every aspect of life, and not just objects. A consumer lens, like the wet glass that is put between his viewers and the subject matter, distorting and skewing reality. There is an invincible intermediate layer between self and object, and thanks to that reflexion, the images Liu Baomin creates are not the appearance of images themselves.
A consumerist and materialistic society produces self-alienation: extremely objectified daily life turns into something extremely unreal. Instead of social criticism, Liu Baomin exploits the appearance of a “self” resulting from a visual experience, making extreme reality become the most trustful portrayal of something unreal.
