When shaping his works, Quentin Garel works with materials with an evident love for organic forms. By exploring their materiality while intentionally playing with our perceptions, he manipulates scale, sometimes pushing it to extremes or through hybridisation, thereby blurring our representation of what exists.

Inspired by the Paris Métro entrance designed by architect Hector Guimard, the great master of Art Nouveau, the artist created Porte Aquatique, a monumental work standing 3.29 metres high. This fantastic “bus shelter” takes the form of a monumental octopus, its contours evoking Gothic vegetal motifs. Quentin Garel makes remarkable use of the sculptural qualities of hammered brass, inviting passengers to enter an imaginary and unknown world, such as that of Cargo City, a transit point towards global horizons.

In the work Porte Atlantique, the artist crystallises both his concern and a certain sense of derision in the face of the fate of animals and humans within a world undergoing profound transformation.

Quentin Garel

Né à Paris en 1975, Quentin Garel est diplômé de l’Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris en 1998 et a résidé à la Casa Velasquez (1998-2000). Son travail de sculpture, en bronze, fer, bois ou porcelaine, se caractérise par la création d’un bestiaire, parfois très réaliste, parfois ramené à un état de squelette. Garel explique : “Depuis quelques années, j’ai développé un travail de sculpture mettant en œuvre des assemblages de bois divers autour du thème du trophée ; coutume orgueilleuse de l’homme que je tente de détourner au profit des animaux de consommation en dénonçant le caractère dérisoire de cette pratique. "
