With Ostrich, Quentin Garel transforms the animal into a presence that is at once monumental, fragile, and singularly human. Cast in bronze, the bird’s silhouette is stretched to extraordinary proportions, playing on the tension between anatomical realism and strangeness.

The artist is less concerned with representing the animal than with revealing a new, almost archetypal form. The ostrich’s verticality, its long neck, and its simultaneously elegant and disconcerting appearance give it a powerful sculptural presence. Between fascination and irony, Garel thus questions our perception of living things and the ever-shifting boundary between the natural and the fantastic.

Quentin Garel

Né à Paris en 1975, Quentin Garel est diplômé de l’École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris en 1998. Il réside ensuite à la Casa de Velázquez, à Madrid, de 1998 à 2000. Son travail de sculpture, réalisé en bronze, fer, bois ou porcelaine, se caractérise par la création d’un bestiaire à la fois singulier et poétique, oscillant entre un réalisme minutieux et une représentation réduite à l’essentiel, parfois jusqu’à l’état de squelette. À travers ce bestiaire en perpétuelle évolution, Quentin Garel explore les frontières entre le vivant et le mort, le naturel et l’artificiel, le monumental et le dérisoire. Ses sculptures jouent ainsi avec notre imaginaire et notre mémoire collective, transformant l’animal en objet de contemplation, de questionnement et parfois d’ironie.
