Molécul’AIR at Centre Pompidou-Metz

History of the Molécul’air armchair

Bernard Quentin’s research into pneumatic structures led him to become the first designer in the early 1960s to create fully inflatable seats without any structural elements. Along these lines, in 1966 he began to develop the “Molecul’Air” principle, inflatable strucutres made up of clusters of spheres, like groups of atoms, which could be transformed into furniture or even houses. His Molecul’Air Armchair, a hybrid between sculpture and furniture, perhaps expresses better than any other work the poetry, magic, and futurism of Bernard Quentin’s work. Designed in 1966, its technical complexity prevented it from being produced until now. Despite this, its innovative power and wild modernity have remained intact, and it was with a view to finally revealing this essential work to the general public that the artist wished to include it in the Art For All collection shortly before he passed away.
