Biography

He Xiangyu was born in 1986 in Kuandian (Manchu Autonomous County) of eastern Liaoning province, China. He is known for his provoking, denunciatory and impressive installations.

In order to create the Cola project in 2009, an apocalyptic landscape with black substance, as the coal provoking the mineral wastes, he employed a group of immigrant workers for one of his series - boiling 127 tons of Coca-Cola for an entire year. The purpose was to denounce the global consummation which changed Chinese culture and also criticised the modes and capitalist reports of production with which it applied.

In the same order of ideas, another work in 2011 represented a tank, which was made of Italian luxury leather in a factory by the workers for two years. This explicit criticism pointed out that the social reports led the rich to such an infatuation of western luxury products, as well as the spiritual emptiness and this kind of display. The tank is such soft as crashed into the ground. Besides, He Xiangyu really admired Maurizio Cattelan, therefore he especially likes the irreverence fusing the same concept.
