SHIP

Marino di Teana’s sculptures are often associated with the constructivists, whom he frequented at the Denise René gallery, because of their certain rigor. But they also possess an incredible poetry. The sculptor always keeps in mind aesthetics and musicality in his research on the composition of space from disintegrated forms. The recurring theme of the “Ship”, which he explored from the 1960s to the 1990s, brings together all these complementary influences that enrich his work. The Ship, inspired by Monteverdi’s opera Orpheus, juxtaposes opposing lines, vertical (the ship’s mast) and horizontal (the surface of the sea), which meet and balance each other through curves (the waves, the ship’s hull). It also evokes physical and cosmological movement and travel. By defining it specifically as a support for spatial composition, Marino attributes to it another function: that of the penetration of forms and the double internal and external circulation of energies.
