Towers & Spires

The 1960s were an opportunity for Marino di Teana to concretely adapt the reflections and theories he had been developing for more than a decade. His sculptures are no longer conceived in an architectural perspective, but constructed as projects that actually became sculpture-models. The many towers and spires he creates at this time are particularly representative examples. Modern Dungeon or Tribute to Paul Héroult are indeed futuristic towers and the focal center of the “future cities” or “hanging cities” that Marino imagines as part of his global project for the modernization of local urban architecture. His Garden Tower is also a fascinating example of the adaptability of Marinian architecture to its environment, for it is possible to vary its height by adding or subtracting floors. This attraction to the privileged shape of the «tower» in the artist’s work also shows that he was aware of the urban problems associated with population explosion. By raising the height of his architectural creations to the maximum, he aimed to reduce the ground area while maximizing living space.

Born in 1920 in Italie, Francesco Marino di Teana was graduated of the Fine- Arts school of Buenos Aires (Argentine), and then moved to France in 1953.

Painter, sculptor, architecte, philosopher and poet, he devoted his whole life and all his creation to discover, develop and construct the modelization projects of urban space. He undertook numerous public and private purchases between the 1960s and the 1990s in France and as well in Europe, a set of Fontaines Monumentales at Grand Palais (Paris), the 21 meters high Liberté in the Fontenay-sous-Bois which is the biggest sculpture of stainless steel in Europe (1990). Presented as well in many museums, like the National Museum of Modern Art, Marino di Teana was subject to a retrospective at the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1976. He also represented Argentina to the Venice Biannale in 1982 and won the Commandant Paul- Louis Weiller de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts Prix in 2009.

Né au cœur d’une famille de paysans, Francesco Marino di Teana fut tour à tour berger puis apprenti maçon en Italie (Teana), chef de chantier, architecte et étudiant des Beaux-Arts en Argentine (Buenos Aires) avant de s’installer à Paris en 1953. À la fois peintre, sculpteur, architecte, poète et philosophe, il devient un des plus importants sculpteurs de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle par ses théories sur la logique tri-unitaire et la sculpture architecturale. Représenté pendant plus de vingt ans par la mythique galerie Denise René et lauréat de prestigieux prix artistiques, il est reconnu par les plus grands créateurs et critiques d’art de son temps. Précurseur des Monumenta du Grand Palais grâce à ses Fontaines Monumentales (9m de haut pour 16m de long) réalisées en collaboration avec Saint-Gobain, il a réalisé plus de 40 sculptures monumentales réparties en France, dont la plus haute sculpture en acier d’Europe, la Liberté de 20m de haut (Fontenay-sous-Bois). Représentant de la Biennale de Venise de 1982 pour l’Argentine, son œuvre fait l’objet d’une grande rétrospective au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris en 1975 et du Prix de l’Académie des Beaux-Arts en 2009.
