“A universal language had to be found and for that to happen, symbols understandable by all had to be invented. However, the meaning of symbols can differ from one continent to another; that is why I have decided upon symbols that can be interpreted by everyone. That is the universal dimension of it. I based myself on Kufic and Zen calligraphies, where each artist may add something, as well as meaning.”

Quentin

In 1977, Bernard Quentin created the L’Art+ collective alongside Jesus Rafael Soto, Jean Messagier, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, Pierre Restany et Serge Rezvani. Their goal was merging art into the environment by adding monumental elements to the landscape. He developed his “art-language” (BABEL 62 project, later renamed “QuentinBabelweb” in 1998), a language based on universal signs and symbols understandable by all.
